Dateline: May 5th & 6th. Speed Weekend and the NSC Results.
From the desk of Dave Simms...
Gentlemen,

WOW, what a great weekend of racing & hangin' with the guys. We saw racers from the two Pa. regions battle for some of the best looking trophies HOCOC has givin' out. The doors opened @ 8:00am Saturday morning for some intense practice of the Grand Nationals, while the Tub saw tunin' for the NSC. We took a break for lunch with hoagies and all the fixins. Then it was back to the Maxx for a final practice session before we called for cars to be turned in. After a quick pre-tech it was time to do battle & once the silicone dust settled it was:

Grand Nationals on the Maxx:

Anthony Zampelli 117 laps 1st
Scott Dunlap 113 laps 2nd
David Simms 111 laps 3rd
JP Ricci 104 laps 4th
Pat Grimm 103 laps 5th
Joe Loh 100 laps 6th
Tim Duggins 92 laps 7th
Ron DiCicco 89 laps 8th
Christian Simms 84 laps 9th
We ran this race with cautions, so totals are net of track calls. Anthony Zampelli ran a perfect race with no offs. All cars passed the post race tech. Trophies were given to the top three racers. We broke for the day & met up a short time later at Issac Newtons for dinner, drinks & a lot of laughs.

Sunday morning came quick and racers started filing in at 7:45am & just kept comin' in. Practice lasted til 10:30am when cars were called in for tech & everyone to pull chips for the runnin' order for the day. There was a lot of races inside the big race with no one goin' down without a fight, so once the buzzer rang for the last time it was:

NSC on Tub:

Anthony Zampelli 250 laps 1st
Derek Scheaffer 250 laps 2nd
David Simms 241 laps 3rd
Jeff Crosley 238 laps 4th
Joe Loh 236 laps 5th
Pat Grimm 235 laps 6th
JP Ricci 234 laps 7th
Chad Phillips 234 laps 8th
Ron DiCicco 229 laps 9th
Scott Dunlap 229 laps 10th
Tim Duggins 220 laps 11th
Travis Gladitsch 220 laps 12th
Hank Galloway 215 laps 13th
All cars were torn down for a post race tech & with all passing, so it was Anthony Zampelli with back-to-back NSC championships to add to his impressive racing career. Congratulations to the CHAMP. It was time for lunch which Adrianna's did an awesome job on, thanks.

Once all were full it was back downstairs for the final event of the weekend after a short practice session. Cars were called for tech and it was off to the races. A lot of close racing but once the checkered flag waved it was:

Jalopies on the Maxx:

Derek Scheaffer 117 laps 1st
Jeff Crosley 115 laps 2nd
Anthony Zampelli 114 laps 3rd
Chad Phillips 110 laps 4th
David Simms 106 laps 5th
Scott Dunlap 106 laps 6th
Joe Loh 103 laps 7th
Pat Grimm 103 laps 8th
Ron DiCicco 97 laps 9th
JP Ricci 97 laps 10th
Tim Duggins 93 laps 11th
Hank Galloway 91 laps 12th
Travis Gladitsch 47 laps 13th
All cars were subject to post race tech with all passing. Trophies were givin out for the day & lots of pictures being taken of the event which will be forwarded to the group. It really was a great weekend overall with all having an awesome time. Thanks to Al, Rich & Trent for all they do for the club & next season will be along in no time. Thanks to all the racers for participating in this event.

Dateline: May 9, 2012 Outlaws At the Pronyne Museum
As you might expect HO slotcar afficianados traveled distances to Curator Ric Mariscal's Pronyne Mueum for a day of racing in the backdrop of history of modified racing here in New England. With the 86 of Dick Caso, the 15 of Bugsy Stevens, the 3(Ole Blue) of Fred Desarro and the 35 of Ray Gelenty as well as other memorabilia the portable Rolling 'O' saw 16 East Coast Outlaws finest battle in 3 classes, Hobby Stocks, Modified Coupes and the jet class was the AFX Fairgrounds. The official report will be out soon. Unofficially Rick Hubbert's Orange Daytona #90 was the in Hobby Stock Victory Lane. In the Modified Coups class Dave Lockwood was in Victory Lane as his ride was flawless and blazed across all lanes. In the Fairgrounds class Rick Hubbert came right back posting a win with his blue #65. In classes there were many positions sections or a lap apart. The racing was that good and close. The Outlaws are grateful to Ric for permitting us the use of his museum and look forward to many more visits. I will include photos when I can put them up.

Dateline: April 23, 2012 Race Announcement for the 7th Annual Nuvolari Enduro.
Posted here is the link to the Nantasket Beach Race Club 7th Annual Nuvolari Enduro. It is currently scheduled for May 19th at the best place I have raced for an event of this type, The Nantasket Beach Race Club home of John Stezelecki. And it is complimented by the finest group of racers. The race was well recieved and gained immediate recognition and popularity among racers. And although only so many entries can be accepted on a basis, since then the requests to be a part of this awesome event increases every year. The race directors etc. don't care to have to exclude anyone. Spectators are around but there is the realistic number for the facility and team enduro that places a cutoff on entries.

Dateline: March 10, 2012 Balanced vs. Balanced & Trued
Of use and interest I offer the following recieved via the Yahoo Group email message exchanges:

Question; Balance armatures vs. Balance and trued -- How do you tell the difference? I might have mixed up a few armatures and I want to make sure I don't use them in the wrong class.

Response; A balanced and trued armature will have no paint on the outside of the lams as they will have been ground down to be true to the shaft, and a balanced arm depending on how its balanced may be by epoxy or by taking material off of the lams by grinding lines in the lams usually vertically or by grinding the top and bottom of the lam.

The club has added a new member, Phil Hilgert. Phil hails from Rhode Island coming via Colorado. He raced out in the Colorado area and has a solid background in the HO racing hobby. He has a few races here under his belt and looks to be a contender in the competition. Welcome aboard Phil Hilgert.

The following was supplied from Phil about himself and background in the hobby.
I began racing slotcars in my basement when I was 8, growing up in IL; inheriting the love of the hobby from my father and his brother.

I got back into basement racing and some club racing in FL shortly after I got out of college. I moved to CO in 1995 and raced with MHOSA (a magnet car club) and the Front Range HO club (a pancake car club).

I have raced at Western States and the UFHORA Nats. I did a barnstorming weekend thru Kansas City in the late 90s racing the magnet car clubs out there. I also was the Race Director for the Interstate Challenge which pitted MHOSA against the Neosho MO magnet car club. I've also raced in a 12hr G-Jet Enduro.

I owned a built a BuckTrack Scorpion, which I subsequently sold. I now own a 5x19 MaxTrack and an HO drag strip, both of which are in storage.

I race anything and everything HO, I'm always there on race day, my son's schedule permitting.

News & Notes from the desk of Russ Upton on Race#1 of Summer Series 2012

Okay guys with all the winter racing going on it's time to start to think about the Summer Series. That being said the first race of the series will be May 13th at CRB Raceway.

The weekend will start off early with a bunch of us taking in the SK Modifieds at Stafford Motor Speedway on Friday night. Then Saturday the 12th will be another build session with a Barbeque at CRB. Hiram again will be in the house along with a host of other celebs to help with setup and tuning of our Hot Rods. Saturday night again will be race filled as we take in some more local racing at Waterford Speedbowl.

Sunday the 13th will be the actual race at CRB with the Nostalgia, Indy and our version of the ground pounders, SS classes being run. Food will be provided by OF Racing for the weekends festivities with the Barbeque and Pizza on Sunday. I'll keep you posted on the other celebs that will be attending but hopefulls are Dave (DBL Controllers) Lockwood, Henry,(Mr. HO) Harnish, Paul, (Zoomin Motorsports) Kniffen, and others.

Hopefully this will be a great start to the Summer and we'll all have a great race weekend.

Russ

Also I will be doing up the rest of the schedule soon and will post when all together.

Although this site cannot possibly keep up with all racing around the country, it does try, I have had an epiphany. I have woke to the fact that I haven't included Southern, 'Good Ole Boys' racing. This is a group of very dedicated and accomplished HO scale racers who engage in events on home tracks. And they are a freindly group who likes the comraderie and competition. Although I haven't raced with them I can testify that they are as good as any racers around. And better. I have just included a link to their Yahoo Group website in the HOCOC News section at the top where you can view race results, photos and the like. They are an awesome club of racers. There is also an LCHORS Club, Low Country HO Racing Series managed by Kevin Browning. Look for a link to that off the Southern Sportsman page of links. My apologies for leaving them off the radar.

I know this isn't on par with slot car racing. But I thought it was worthy of sharing. I also believe this body is now offerred by some HO slot car body producers. Enjoy this as I did:

Weekend Racing events schedule: This weekend coming, Sunday November 20th, will see the HOCOC Annual 'SIZZLER'. The evnt will be held on 'Rich Dumas' beautifully lighted East Haven Raceway. Rich has posted photos of his efforts to create a realistic feel to racing by introducing a light system around the track. Cars need no lights in them as the track provides the lighting. Racers will be travelling to do battle in the NSCS, Jalopy's and ASRL(NOT G-Jets). See the rules on ASRL for the new class of T-Jet. I was asked if the track would be a road course or an oval, the answer is that for the Sizzler it will be a road course. Later in the season there will be a second race here and for that one the track will be an oval with lights. Doors will be open by 8:30 or so, please enter by the people door on the front of the garage.

I'd like to draw attention to a fellow racer who may not have got as much notice on this website and is overdo. Greg Burstein is a young man who loves to race. He has raced 1/24th scale where he has had much success. This was due to his tuned skill and talent to take a car around a track as good as any racer. He decided to try his hand out at the 1/64th HO scale cars and although different from what he was used to racing there was little to no transition period needed. He quickly grasped the necessary awareness, sense and feeling for the cars. He has been consistantly finding himself on the podium either winning races, chasing the winner close behind them and/or coming in 3rd! He has a terrific knack for the hobby/sport and ranks with the Tindalls, Luxes, Lockwoods, Wards, Bournes and other drivers who comprise the best in the hobby. Greg will be around for sometime turning heads and making others aware he is a force to reckon with. You will be hearing more from this young gun as he is loaded for bear when the green flag drops.
One caveat on respect of those who have been in the hobby for some time and are highly regarded is that Greg doesn't have the time in the hobby they have. But I am sure that will be changing in the future of course.
As long as I'm dropping names of notable racers, and I'm sure I will be leaving out some, here are a few you can add in to the list:
  • Paul Kniffen
  • Hiram Durant
  • Ryan Peoples
  • Travis Joop
  • Rick Phillis
  • R.C. Lincoln
  • Tom Bowman
  • Ken Ott
  • Chuck Scheaffer
  • I can't pick out specific names from the Southern 'Good Ole Boys' but they are there.
  • Other names I run across after awhile.
As I have been predominantly a New England area racer I don't encounter a huge chunk of the racing across the country. Many local tracks have 'hot shoes' so to speak who can hang with most anyone. The better racers are those who can 'read' a track and car and adjust the car and their driving to suit that particular track. And some tracks take more than others while others might take little to none.

For sometime now a young man, R.C. Lincoln of Wizzard heraldry, has been doing balancing and truing of armatures. From comments I come across these arms are stated to be excellent. When you consider that you can be as finicky as you want with the chassis if the power source isn't giving peak performance due to an imbalanced arm and an untrue commutator you are running the race with an incomplete car. To complete a car the arm needs what it needs. I invite you to click the image link here to visit

Dynamic Armatures
website for the latest information about getting more from your armature(s). This link is also now listed in the links directory under the 'Community' button at the top of ther page.
One note of caution: Always check rules for what you can and can't do. Despite balancing and truing improving your car's performance the rules may require neither, both or only one to be legal in a class you want to use this in. What would seem to be an improvement for your car may be just the thing to get DQ'ed from instead.

U.S. G-Jet Grand Prix
After a lot of blood sweat and tears to arrange the U.S. G-Jet extravanganze it HAPPENED. And what an event!! The facility is what first hits you. Peter Lentros had opened up an area for HO slot car racing. It has the Scorpion(T-Jet Indy cars), and Car Model track(The G-Jets). The card had 3 classes. !st was the T-Jet Indy class, 2nd the G-Jet Formula F1 class and on Sunday the 902 class. The event drew a field of 29 or 30 racers. With any event there are those who are a whose who of HO slot car racing. And some who may not be that but hold their own and then there are those I associate with who provide our own competition among ourselves. Wherever you might be it was an awesome day. Both tracks ran nicely. Of course tires can be sensitive so any contamination could cause problems. But those seemed to be more of a tire substance than track. I watched as the competition was close in laps. In the Indy class I finished somewhere near 15th to 17th and was 15 laps back. That's a lap per position!!
The event called for everyone to follow suit in driving and then marshalling. All complied and things ran very smooth. Cars came in many styles of the Offy era. But all had to pass as rules stipulated. Early on Bruce Gordon set the pace/standard in his formula Indy car with a 122 laps that held up for the victory. 2nd place went to Greg Wisniewski, 3rd to Paul Ryer and 4th to Phillip H.
Next up were the G-Jets on the Car Model track. These cars were made for this track and they were jetting. Fast times were in the high 2.XXX sec/lap!! When the last lap was run it was John Reimels taking down the win followed by Tom Kanaan and Paul Ryer.

The Formula 902 race was run on Sunday and I have no results for those. I might add that my reporting here is subject to any report from an offical source.

Much effort went into this event and all agreed we were fortunate to be able to enjoy a hobby that isn't around as much as it used to be. Peter Lentros is still adding tracks and sprucing up the facility with help from John Stezelecki, Tom Smith and many others.

Dateline: 25, September, 2011
UPDATE The date for the Nutmeg Classic has been changed to Sunday, November 6th.

Looking forward to making a maiden voyage to Ashland MA. to visit a complete slotcar facility, Modelville Hobbies. Since the US. G-Jet F1 Grand Prix will be held there I thought I should become acquainted with the place and it's tracks. So, I will be traveling to see for myself. Meanwhile, for those who, as I, haven't been there the internet is the place to get a taste of Modelville. Here is a link to Modelville's website and a link to the U.S. Grand Prix flyer.

From the desk of Al Perschilli;
We are pleased to announce that TKO Raceway located in Elizabethville, Pa. has become the newest group to be a part of the National Sportsman Championship sanctioned by HOCOC. Todd and his group aka as the "Pennsylvania Posse" are really excited about the NSC and should bring a lot to the series. TKO's Schedule will be out shortly. Interest in the series continues to grow and this upcoming season should be the best on record as far as competition and attendance.
