NOTES about TKO:
This is a newly formed club of organized racers. Their hometrack is an incredible facility at TKO Raceways from owner/operator Todd Kaufman. Todd also builds slot car tracks. For the most part the racers are not new. I have paid them a visit to an event and it is a huge facility. The tracks are challenging on their own. But, toss in the local runner competitors and it gets fast and furious. No matter how you do you come away with a good feeling. As with any racing the cars always call for help. TKO is a one stop shop with anything you need or I'm pretty certain they will find it for you. Need help? Plenty of seasoned builder/racers who will be more than happy to rescue your situation. I found that out with local racer Derek who helped me along with a car that was tempermental. And if he's busy Travis might be available along with others as well.
They are just starting out racing at TKO and have come on board with HOCOC's Late Model Sportsman Series(The NSCS). They run support classes and from time to time an NSCS event. Their names are listed below for reference. If you're curious about this hobby stop by during their hours of operation and ask any questions you might have. Then you might also attend an event to see what that is like. Keep in mind the saying, you have to crawl before you can walk, as the locals will already be ahead on the walking part if not running. But the effort you make and need to put in is part of the hobby, satisfaction and enjoyment.

Well as we close in on the end of the season and the NSCS Championship things are getting close in the standings. With low numbers recently we have missed a few races but today we did run an lms race. We also have been exploring a new in house class with stock t-jets and JW's aluminum stock replacement wheels and black silicone slip on tires.

Bruce Gordon Wins the Late Model Stocks
Dave Simms Captures the Super Stocks

I'll describe the weekend from my own experience with some nonconnected comments on the events of the race card.
It was about 105 miles from my home to Anthony Zampelli's home in Maspeth/Queens, NYC. Not being a city schooled driver I was challenged but with minor difficulty arrived in time to hook up with Anthony, Bruce & Yucha who travelled from Worcester MA.!! We still had the trip ahead out to Elizabethville, PA. where Todd Kaufman and his race group would host a 2 event venue the Late Model Stock and the Super Stock classes. With Anthony at the helm of his palace on wheels we rode in style and arrived late Friday but Todd was gracious enough to keep the track open for testing, tuning and tweaking which would also happen the next day, Saturday when more racers would arrive and they too would look for that special chassis and motor combination.

The Late Model Race
(1)Bruce Gordon, (2)Greg Burstein and (3)Anthony Zampelli

The LMS was run on the TKO HO scale king track design. Not being all that good at recollecting I will do my best. Eventually the call came for registration and turning in cars. Once this was done the race sequence was determined by a process not known to me. But it wasn't biased just not known how it was arrived at. Most everyone I saw had a car that handled so no one has any handling issues. But the track was not forgiving as there were a couple of subtlties. The track had a negativer camber in the 'finger'. On the corner at the top of the donut it has a slight dip. Both of these required a conscious effort to 'set' the car just before these corners. If not cars would deslot and with groupings of cars being close one false move and you might drop a place or more.

If I recall Greg Burstein completed his heats and then Anthony Zampelli. These 2 were looking for the win with Greg nosing out Anthony by a lap. However there was still one driver yet in the hunt and with his final heat to go. I can't recall what lane he ran but he poured it on knowing it was for the win. And when the heat ended he had that one lap he needed to take the win. It was (1)Bruce Gordon, (2)Greg Burstein and (3)Anthony Zampelli within 2 laps of each other!! Bruce earned this win as he took fast lap time on every lane except red where Greg Burstein was the man on fire with fast time. Rounding out the top 5 with great runs were local guns Chad P.(4) and TKO himself Todd Kaufman(5). There were 13 laps separating spots 5 thru 17. After the top 4 the racing was tight!!! Congratulations Bruce Gordon on your LMS victory.

The Super Stock Race
The finale' was the popular Fray style Super Stocks. Since this race would be run on both the King HO and the road course it was decided to split the field and run the fastest group on the King while the slower group would run the road course. When they finished they would swap and run the other course. This race would be set by a 3 lap time trial to place racers in an order of the fast group and the slow group. This being done the groups went to their respective tracks and with help at the computer the green flag would drop and they would pound out the laps.

The 'B' Group
(1)Yucha, (2)Jeff Crosley and (3)Tyler D.
In the slower group Yucha pounded out 79 laps with a 21 lap heat!! Jeff Crosley was in hot pursuit with a 76. And then there was 'Young Gun' Tyler D. who 'put the hammer down' and posted 73 laps in the 3rd podium spot. The competition was nip & tuck for the 4th through 6th positions as Michelle, Chip and Rudy came in at 71 laps. And they were only a few laps up on the next spots as well. There was some good competitive racing in the group.

The 'A' Group
(1)Dave Simms, (2)Chuck Schaeffer and (3)Greg Burstein
In the top group the competition was incredible! Fast time was posted as drivers came in and heats were completed. Fast lap times dropped as drivers caught the rhythm of the track. When Dave Simms hit the blue lane he set the fast time with a blistering 6.249!! But there was no guarantee of victory as he also had fast lap on orange but surrendered fast lap time on the other 4 lanes!! Dave is a great road course driver and his car was prepared. When it was over he had his victory but it couldn't be any closer as the final screen here will show. Chuck Shaeffer and Greg Burstein were not about to make this a cheap give away win as they pushed themselves and cars to the limit coming up short by the smallest of margins. When the checkered flag came out, with the sweat pouring off and a breath of relief it was Dave Simms race.

Overall Standings
(1)Dave Simms, (2)Chuck Schaeffer and (3)Greg Burstein
Both the LMS and the Super Stock event laps were added and racers finished where their totals put them. For the entire weekend the finishing order put the 3 drivers above on the podium. Included here is a photo of the computer screem of where they finished.

Gratitude and many thanks to Todd Kaufman for opening his facility to all who raced. Many thanks to each and every racer who participated and supported this event that will jump start the organized racing for the HOCOC LMS and support races that will create the Pennsylvania LMS Region of competition leading up to the HOCOC LMS championship weekend of racing. This facility has massive area and 3 HO tracks along with I believe 3 1/24th scale tracks. Plenty of pit space so crowding didn't happen.
Russ Upton, Bruce Gordon, Anthony Zampelli, Derek S, Travis, Tyler D. and others stepped up prior to this event to assist in getting TKO Raceways up and running. For the Race Russ Upton and a local whose name I can't recall as well as others I can picture but have no names ran races, manned the computers and contributed effort(s) to keep things running as smooth as possible.

I enjoyed myself throughout the weekend whether I was racing, marshalling or neither. The track is in a shopping place with ample parking. And although McDonald's was at the entrance to the shopping plaza Debbie and the cook whose name escapes me provided great food and drink the day long!!!
