from the desk of Matt Patrick
And From the Camera Eye of Rich Dumas
Nostalgia 2009... WOW!, some great racing, with 5 different winners in 5 different classes, it was a fight in almost all classes that went door to door for alot of 1st, 2nd and 3rd spots... There could have been some really close races if not for the number of cutions that the "Banchi Slider" Banked Oval can produce, with the speed and sliding through the corners, it could have been almost anybodies race in almost all the divisions... Congrats to Al on his BIG Coupe win, if I could have saved that last off I might have gotten 3rd, if I knew you and Rick were gonna be that fast I'd a run my Grand American and gone home with two pieces of hardware... LOL Hindsight is a marvelous thing..... And another spectacular drive was that of Rich Hubbert in holding off Richie Audette for the win.
Congrats to a returning H.O. racer Auther Lapierre who scored the Grand American feature. Lets not forget the drive to the Vintage Tin cars by Rich "Dr. Speed" Dumas, nice job beating a seasoned vet like Mark Kaminski, the "Killer" K-Man had a good car, but had to settle for 2nd place. Thanks to Gerry Cullen's hospitality and of course the fine conditions of his track, very professional. Great turnout even though a few good racers chose not to take the time for practice on the slider for the NSC, all went well without any problems... http://homeracingworld.yuku.com/topic/16794

Race #2, The Barnstormer
Couldn't have been a better day to race with the weather putting a damper on much else except sitting in front of a TV. No matter, the Brickyard Racearena has become a landmark track in it's early beginnings. It is a real challenge!!
This event saw Matt Patrick, Rick Hubbert, Dave & Tony Howarth, Cameron, Mark Kaminsky and Rudy Urban hook up and take on the Brickyard challenge. Three classes were on the card. The 1st class was the Hobby Stocks. This is a great class where you can find motor but with the Hobby Stock rules you will HAVE TO DRIVE your way to victory or a decent finish. When the flag dropped it was non-stop wall to wall fender to fender racing. Mark Kaminsky had his '66 Goat(GTO) running fast and smooth across all lanes and while Matt and Rick couldn't keep it in the slot he posted high laps. But the real story was unfolding as Dave Howarth was taking his #48 to victory with a masterful display of driving against the odds. The #48 was fine tuned and taking no prisoners as he earned his way to victory lane. Very nice Dave!! Cameron, Tony and Rudy all had problems that plagued them taking them out of competition.
Side comment/note: Running in several heats together, Dave & Rudy, side by side provided some very competitive racing. But, having said this it must be noted that Rudy was DQ'ed for having illegal axles. These provided greater handling than other cars. Not knowing this at the time Daver Howarth could have thrown away the race to go after Rudy. In fact one of Dave's offs was a nerf from Rudy! His better judgement prevailing brought him home to finish and ultimately post his victory!! Kudos to Dave for his driving amd judgement. Anti-kudos to Rudy for his illegal car and illegal driving.
Dave Howarth,
Mark Kaminsky,
TJ Motola
Next class was the Coupes class. This was a dual between the #1 of Matt Patrick and the Fred Foshay #151 of Mark Kaminsky. Both were screamin' around the track but time would run out on the #1 and Victory Circle belonged to the 'K' Man and his #151. Matt and the #1 came home 2nd and a clean run from TJ Motola and his blue #3 earned him a hard driving 3rd spot.
Mark Kaminsky,
Matt Patrick,
TJ Motola
Final event for the Barnstormer was the lightning fast Fairgrounds. Rick Hubbert set the early pace in his late model '55 Chevy as he tore up the track. He would have handling problems and track out. Meanwhile the 'K' Man's black primer #83 was taking over the lead. He held it until Dave Howarth tracked him down in his green/white entry. This car sits low and flies! Rudy Urban then came on board with his blue/white #3 Camaro and showed the way to the winner's circle as he posted the most laps. TJ Mottola & Matt Patrick had issues and Cameron and Tony came home in the final positions with clean runs.
Rudy Urban,
Mark Kaminsky,
Dave Howarth
Track/Race Promoter Mark Kaminsky provided snacks, hot dogs and libation. Club President TJ Mottola handed out awards to top finishers and thanked everyone who participated. The award for Best Appearing Entry went to the red #1 Coupe of Matt Patrick's. Matt's machine is a beautiful clean appearing creation. The next event for the ECO will be the Hoosier HO Down at Big 'T's' Lil' Speedway.

Posted 10/12/2009 – "Road Rage HO Closing"
From the desk of Dennis Rutherford
Folks,
I have thought on and off about this for some time now and finally decided it's time to close up Road Rage Ho. I don't have a firm date yet but since folks are starting to ask and rumors will then tend to fly .... I figure I should come out and tell everyone I will be closing up soon. Some will ask for a reason and frankly the only one I have is that I just seem to have lost the desire and fire I once had. I have found myself slower to produce , respond , follow up and honestly do all that should be done to run a business and give the customer what they deserve. I thought that after taking a vacation I would feel energized and perhaps give it another go. But as I sit here now it's hard enough to even keep a pilot light lit let alone get the fire I once had. So I wish to take this time to say thanks to all my customers over the years and to all the friends I have made . I truely appreciate all you have done for me and the joy and passion for the hobby we shared.
Take care , Dennis
PS(mine), I never met Dennis in person but dealt with him via email. He earned a place at the top of my list of people I respect. When the sport has something happen where they lose a decent person's business affiliation there is a moment of reflection. I had no idea but not surprised that Dennis demands so much from himself for his customers. I certainly would never close the door to hearing that he is back. But, I respect his decision and wish him all the best!!!RU

SIZZLER TIDBITS
Some great racing took place. The distance between 1st
and 2nd place in all 3 of the events was only track
sections. Trent Bradbury had a strong showing all day
and what more can you say about his jalopy's, they
were great looking ! The Jalopy's were a hit. All
those who were present had choosen to run them instead of
the "missle cars", the APLM's. It will be cool to see
more of them on the track as the season goes on.
The SK's weren't run because everyone wanted to get going
on the road before a parade in town started and nobody
wanted to get caught in traffic. Gentlemen Jim Tyma
brought the goodies and as usual Richard had the track
in great shape. All in all it was a enjoyable day of racing.

'Day Two'
ECHORR Challenge - 2009 - Day 2 - Saturday - Team Racing
The Hall was to open at 8 am, I got there @ 7:50 AM and the parking lot was full, racers chomping at the bit. The doors opened, everyone signed in and received participant plaques and trays. I ran around and quickly cleaned some of the tracks. We had a Driver's meeting at 8:30 and handed out the team cars to the captains @ 8:45 AM; fifteen minutes to get to first rack and warm the cars up. We started the program at 9 AM and everyone was going full tilt by 9:10 AM. We would run 7 races of the 13 and break for lunch. There were some hotdogs and drinks available at the Hall, but that did not last long. As the racing was going on, local collector Doug Keys set up his wares and had quite a bit of traffic to his table, T-shirts for the event were selling and Todd and Debbie of TKO fame set up to answer questions and get feedback from the racers. Todd is always looking for ways to improve his products and love to hear from the racers.
I did not race much during this event, so I got a chance to go around and watch some of the team racing, Wow! Everyone has certainly improved their equipment and driving. There were many close races during the day and the team records don't necessarily reflect the closeness of the completion. There was a lot of laughing and carrying on during the races which was great to see.
The results after the dust settled:
Team W L T
KC - Jet 13 0 0
ZoominMotorsports 12 1 0
Buckeye Thunder 11 2 0

It was now time for the Team Awards and for the 2nd Challenge in a row Team KC-Jet (Steve Ward, Clint Bourne, Don Royal, John Habernal and a couple of cameos by me) went undefeated. Congrats to team KC-Jet, they were pushed hard but still prevailed.
Based on our experience from the night before, Janet went to a local sports bar named Time Out and reserved a private room for the Challenge participants... Much better! We were inside and could actually hold a conversation without being drowned out by noise. We drank we ate, drank some more and shared tales of this event and past races.
Next report, next week will cover the Individual and IROC race as well as our generous sponsors.
I am off to KC till mid next week... Have a great Holiday Weekend.

'Day One'
ECHORR Challenge 2009 - Day 1 - Friday
Up at 5:30 AM, have to get to the hall by 7 AM to start breaking down tables and chairs and prep for 7 tracks and pit spaces. When I got there the tables were all setup and chairs stacked up on them, it was the Bingo night setup for @ 400 people. Tim Leppert strolled in a few minutes after me and started to break down chairs, a few minutes later Dave Lockwood came in and the three of us worked for @ 45 minutes before some more support came in. All told we worked close to 2 hours just breaking down tables and chairs. At @ 9 AM we started to bring in the tracks and stage them. Then we all had to stop when Big Anthony arrived, his "portable "track needs special attention and 12 guys to get it in and staged. We worked on Anthony's track then one by one we staged the other tracks. We set up the pit tables so each team could have at least 2 tables per, Janet, Cheryl (Paul Kniffen's better half) and Anthony's wife Rose made sure each table had a plastic cover on it, when you looked from the stage it resembled a checkered flag, alternating black and white table covers, awesome job ladies!. I had to run out to the Post Office to get some track parts and stop at Radio Shack to get some connectors, by 11 AM all the tracks were in and being connected and cleaned and making sure the glitches were out, yes we did run some cars on the tables, but this really cannot be considered any "extra" practice for anyone. Thanks to all that were part of the set up crew, you worked hard and made sure everything was ready when promised. By noon most of the participants had arrived and were marking their territory in the Hall. The tracks were open for practice and everyone started to rotate on the tracks to get their team cars ready. It was now time for me to do the administrative part of the event, hang master tally sheets, rotation sheets, etc. and make sure each table had the proper scoring sheets and the right color lane stickers (Thanks Henry for the Lane Stickers).
At 1 PM I held a Team Captain's meeting to hand out the rule set and discuss the schedule, etc. for the weekend. ZoominMotorsports and my roaming store were set up on vendor's row in the back of the hall. On Saturday local collector Doug Keys set up to add some "collector" flavor to the event.
Late afternoon came early and it was almost Tech time. I assembled the Tech crew and gave them instructions, the teams lined up to get their cars through tech. Thanks to all the Tech guys and to Paul Kniffen for working on bodies for racers, even if they were not ones he cast. I assembled the Captains to draw their team numbers, we had some open practice for the classic cars and did the Team intros all by 7:30 PM, not bad! All team cars were put in boxes and sealed impounded till Saturday AM.
A group of us went to a local place called The Green Turtle for some much needed adult beverages and food. It was rather crowded and we finally got seated outside and it was cold and rather damp, but the drinks were awesome!! Another Early rising on Saturday, the hall was to open at 8 AM.
Day 2 report - Team Race Day - to follow........

Posted 10/06/2009 – "2009 ECHORRS Report"
From the desk of Rudy Urban
The annual ECHORRS event is one gathering of awesome skill & talent in this hobby. It is also a gathering of those fortunate enough to rub elbows with these leaders of our hobby. Hiram Durant presents a great weekend of competition. There are those of us who find a smattering of close racing due to our limited knowledge and equipment. But we witness to those who bring with them vast knowledge, superior equipment and skill. This provides the backdrop drawing from the finest competition you'll find in HO racing. While the East Coast Outlaws found themselves licking their wounds with a lone victory but 2 very close matches we witnessed the best go at each other and learned some fascinating concepts that enhance these simple looking little cars.
Hiram Durant may be posting his recap and report and I hestitate to upstage him as this was and is still his event. The ECHORR webpage is at; ECHORR(East Coast HO Road Racing)
If I can drop some names, Henry Harnish, Hiram Durant, Clint Bourne, Steve Ward, Dave Lockwood, Don Bourne, Don Royal, "Habby', Ryan Peoples, Tom Bowman, Jerry Schmoyer and so many others I just aren't recalling at this moment participated. The VHORS Classic race was run on Anthony Zampelli's Diamond Plate road course and across the board, from the 1st to last all enjoyed racing this course. Once drivers found the track's rhythm they settled in and pushed themselves and machines to the limit. When the smoke cleared the Final Four had staged themselves for the Big Dance, Big Showdown or you call it? Those who didn't make it weren't going to make it an easy path to the Final and the Final Four weren't there by chance as they carried strong reputation and earned their place in the deciding head to head competition.
But as our lives had taken a schedule change that made us thoroughly exhausted we looked forward to getting back home and trying out new ideas from what we saw and learned. I want to thank my teamates; Mark, 'Kman', Kaminsky for supplying sustanance, Jim, 'Ahyup', Hoar for his leadership skills and TJ Motola for supplying liabation and driving down and back!!!! One of last year's key team members, Matt, 'Coupe Man', Patrick was unable to join us. Special thanks should go out to Hiram Durant for organizing and to all those individuals who provided their tracks for this event. Setting up and taking down was the ugly side of putting this on. But the reward was there and I suspect the competition in this annual event will evolve to even greater levels as it attracts the best the hobby has to offer. Untill the next ECHORRS as Bill Kurtz would say;

October 3rd and 4 th
The home based, Rhode Island, East Coast Outlaws are fielding a team for the 2009 ECHORR Challenge. As I make this entry the team is getting itself together for the 4 to 5 hour trip to Finksburg Maryland. In fact, phone rings: "Hi Rudy, We're here over in Montville waiting for Rick to deliver the cars. Will be a short while and we'll be there to pick you up. TJ got his company's project done so he's coming with us instead of meeting us there. See ya soon...end.
The original team was Rick Hubbert(CT), TJ Mottola(RI), Jim Hoar(ME), Rudy Urban(CT) and Mark Kaminsky(CT). With great disappointment we are having to go without the presence of Rick Hubbert. Economics have him working Saturdays and as we know about what is important has to be employment. However, we have the benefit of his expertise in setting us up with the teams entries for cars. Another would have been there driver/eracer was Matt Patrick. Matt found himself attending a much more important Family activity. We will definitely miss Rick and Matt's driving and knowledge at the event but will dedicate our efforts for him in this event. In an email exchange with the Southern Man Bill Kurtz, team Tye Dye, he admits the field is the toughest he's seen. We will give it our best and in the spirit of the hobby we will have a fun event and take what we get as just being there is an accomplishment and rubbing elbows with notable names in the hobby and fellow racers we seldom see we will doubtless bring home positive memories. We will be there and I'll bring back the report. Having attended last year's event I can say Hiram Durant and his staff are striving to improve it and we are looking forward to another classic ECHORR Challenge. Gentlemen, hook up your controllers!!

From the desk of Trent Bradbury
Subject: [Berlin Blast - Celebrating 30 years of HOCOC]
Gentlemen,
Saturday September 26, 2009 brought forward the Inaugural race of the thirtieth HOCOC racing season. A great big Thank You to Tom Gumina for hosting this event. It was a busy day for me as I found myself in the position of being the only HOCOC "official" present at the event due to circumstances beyond anybodies control. With out assistance from Matt Patrick it would not have gone as well as it did.
This was the maiden voyage for the All Star Racing League (ASRL) which features G-Jet chassis and NASCAR style bodies in a team racing format. Although there are some minor issue's to be straightened out this class was met with great enthusiasim. I am sure that this class will be adopted by other regions in the country as was the NSC. Many thanx also go out to the MARC racers who participated (or Tried to particpate in this event ( Hope you feel better Stez) 8 racers participated in this team event in which 2 teams of 4 competed each racer on each team raced 2 heats of 15 minutes each. By the time all was said and done the smoke was pouring out of my ears due to overload. However, in the end I was able to keep a handle on the paper work and the race went relatively smooth. 2 teams were picked randomly and designated red and black. the Red team was John R.* Matt P. Manuel P. and Rudy U. the Black team was Jim H. Bill C.* Vince T.* and Rick H. * indicates MARC Member When the dust settled the black team defeated the red 1092 laps to 1077 laps. Think about that for a second 8 racers over 2000 laps raced and a difference of 15 laps!! I am looking forward to some really tight, competitive racing in this class.
Congratulations to the inaugural ASRL race winners; Jim Hoar, Bill Craven, Vince Tamburo and Rick Hubbert
Next up was the Tjet division. I am afraid to call it anything else because of the criticism from individuals outside of HOCOC. It was billed as VHORS SS race and run under the HOCOC SS Tjet rules which allows us some latitude to accomodate racers from other areas and clubs. This event was held on Berlins twisty road course which is and has been on of my favorite tracks on the HOCOC tour.
Results
1. Rudy 62 laps
2. Rick H. 61 laps
3. Brian B. 57 laps
4. Manuel P.57 laps
5. Trent B. 53 laps
6. Matt P. 51 laps
7. Jim H. 50 Laps
8. Kyle 37 Laps
There was a scoping discrepancy which allowed me to move up a position (my offs were subtracted twice) as always the scoring sheets will be available for inspection next race.
Next up was the National Sportsman Challenge an interesting side note to this class originally known as the New England Sportsman challenge when concieved by HOCOC over 15 years ago this class is also known as the Southern Sportsman Challenge after racers down south split from the NSC and formed there own series.
This race was held on Berlin Raceway's scale 1/2 mile oval track racing on this track is reminiscent of the old Westboro Speedway which was located less than 10 miles away. Once the dust settled and the fertilizer was spread the results were;
NSC Results
1. Rick H. 183
2. Manuel Pino 179
3. Rudy 166
4. Jim H. 162
5. Brian Bright 157
6. Trent B.132
7. Matt P 62
Well there it is another one in the books and one hell of a good time. A special thank You to Brian Bright for making the drive from Maplewood New Jersey to race with us again. I hope to see you all next month at the Sizzler on Sunday October 11 2009 for an event which will feature dual NSC Races your choice of the APLM or Jalopy class and the Non Qualifiers SK modifieds.
Its gonna be a great racing season

The race report etc. is yet to come. It was a better than expected turnout as 3 M.A.R.C racers showed for the ASRL event. This was a team G-Jet event and a race report from Commissioner Matt Patrick wil be coming. And the 2 remaining events saw Brian Bright make his appearance as well!!! HOCOC also saw Manuel Pino for the 1st time. Manuel is a hard charging competitor who usually finishes well. Host and Promoter Tom Gumina had the tracks working well as usual and provided food and beverage. Thanks to the following who made the trip to Berlin HO Raceways;
- Manuel Pino
- Trent Bradbury
- Matt Patrick
- Jim Hoar
- Bill Craven
- John Reimels
- Vince Tamburo
- John Stezelecki who did not compete or stay due to being under the weather on health.
- Brian Bright

Posted 09/21/2009 – Southern 2 Race Report
From the desk of Bill Kurtz
Here at HOCOC we promote the hobby of HO Slotcar racing. Click here to read our Mission Statement. We are well aware of our racing friends and counterparts who feel the passion and maintain their same high level of respect for the hobby they love. I haven't met them all but have met Bill Kurtz, Gary Butner and Lewis Wuori. We here at HOCOC recognize and salute the organizing of their race program by it's organizers and the efforts of those who particpate for the love of the hobby. From the full circle involvement of all those racers the race program not only exists but flourishes from season to season. In recognition of them I offer the Southern 2 Race Report from Mr. Bill Kurtz whose involvement plays a key role in the existance and operation of the Southern Racing Organization. If it weren't for the distance we would be racing with each other. The race report here found them gathering at Gary Butner's facility, Oak Hill Speedway. For all of this and more you can visit their Yahoo Group here:

Southern 2
A Race Report
Oak Hill Motorsports
Oak Hill, West Virginia
September 19, 2009
The racers of the Southern Sportsman Series returned to Oak Hill on Saturday for not only the second race of the sportsman season but also the first ever of the new ECHORR Fray / VHORS supporting series and the day was jam packed with some excellent side by side.
Everyone was glad to see Gary Butner return from the pitbox to the racetrack after some recent ticker problems and he wasted little time showing us that he hasn’t missed a beat.
The racers spent most of the practice session picking the gear set-up, struggling between the high speed 14 tooth versus the better handling 9 tooth ratio. The 14 has ruled Oak Hill for as long as I can remember but as the Southern racer’s stables have grown, so has their 9 tooth performance and today we saw many go with the 9. We did have to fuddle through some odd pick-up shoe set-ups, moving from very little show travel to way more than needed since we knew we would give up speed on those long OHM straights for superior handling in the inner sections of this massive lay-out. In the end it was only sections that would separate those polarized chassis variations in some of the closest racing we have seen in years.
As we crossed the line we were scored:
- Bill Kurtz 88 Laps - 47 sections
- Kevin Browning 88 Laps - 37 sections
- Gary Butner 88 Laps - 31 sections
- Robert Penn - 84
- Skylar Spake - 83
- Tommy Jakubowski – 80
- Lewis Wuori - 77
- Chris Walker - 77
- Todd Martin - 73
- Cody Dennler - 72
- Dwayne Hoyle - 70
- Alan Moss - 68
- John Adams - 72
- Sam McCormick - Disqualification: Gearplate
Next up - Bristol (oops, I mean the Oak Hill Oval), this six lane Tomy torture track is set up in a concave up/down/up fashion to give the racer an illusion that the corners are banked. But they are not, they are flat and you don’t realize it until you are hard into the wall in turn 2. You have to pay attention, taking only the speed she allows since coming out of the corners proves as testing as going into them. Many a racer negotiated their cars through the tight turns only to de-slot as they pulled down the straight to early.
Kevin Browning continued his 2009 streak in dominating fashion taking the win by 15 laps over second place and last years series champion Chris Walker. Chris may have had a disappointing finish at MOPAR Mountain but know seems to be pulling things back together in the Walker Racing garage.
Robert Penn finished off the podium and gave West Virginia their second third place finish of the day, they were not as powerful as they normally are but still prove to be a force to be reckoned with.
Southern 2 Results - Final
- Kevin Browning - 566 laps
- Chris Walker - 551
- Robert Penn - 542
- Tommy Jakubowski - 537
- Sam McCormick - 532
- Bill Kurtz - 527
- Skylar Spake - 518
- Alan Moss - 507
- Dwayne Hoyle - 505
- Todd Martin - 499
- Lewis Wuori - 497
- Gary Butner - 419 (Track Out)
- John Adams - 93 (Track Out)
Several racers had successful days, most notably Tommy Jakubowski, Skylar Spake, Sam McCormick and Todd Martin. It was also great to see John Adams again, this is racer who's passion for the hobby is unmatched by anyone.
To all the racers who made the effort to travel to Oak Hill and support our series I thank you and a big'ol shoot-out to Mrs. Butner and those fabulous Brownie Cupcakes ... well worth the drive in their own right.
We move to our southern most venue in October as the 'Low County' welcomes the Southern Sportsman Series on October 17th, we will see ya there!
Keep on Racing

Posted 09/20/2009 – East Coast Outlaws
Opened their season
Promoter/host Jim Hoar's Sebago Raceway in Windham Maine was the scene this weekend for the opening race of the East Coast Outlaws 2009/2010 season. Racers started to check in at around 9:00 am and continued through early afternoon for the 1:00 pm green flag. It was a 3 class card. Cars were checked in and when the green flag for the J/L Sportsman dropped it signaled the East Coast Outlaws 2009/2010 race season was on. This class saw what was the quickest/fastest car of ther field, Matt Patrick's entry, track out partway through the final heat. This gave Rick 'The Hammer' Hubbert clear sailing to victory circle. As you can rely Rick's ride was nearly as fast so there is understandabley some disagreement on who had the quickest/fastest car. Making his 1st pilgrimage to the facility was Mark, 'K-Man', Kaminsky whose #10 finished in 2nd place while Rudy Urban in the M&M's #38 took 3rd just a few laps back. It must be noted that although Dave Howarth tracked out he was sporting an equally fast car to Rick & Matt's. And Young Gun Cameron served notice he is more seasoned than when he started off as he gave Rudy Urban side by side lap after lap racing in the heat they were next to each other. That's a feather in his cap and he will be placing in the not to distant future.
The 2nd race on the card was the Modified Coupes. Here there were 3 bullets, Rick Hubberts 8 Ball, Mark Kaminsky's red #8 and the red jet of Matt Patrick. Rick Hubbert's 8 Ball was not only fast but handled while K-Man and Matt P. gave chase and may well have caught The Montville Rocket but for the offs as both tracked out. While some of the field benefited from this the main beneficiary was the #4 Rumble Coupe of Rudy Urban who placed 2nd 16 laps back. If memory serves me the race host Jim Hoar took home 3rd. To note once again although tracking out Dave Howarth had one equally fast yellow coupe.
Racers then moved to the long way around road course for the feature event on the card, the Fray Race. Once again Rick Hubbert and Matt Patrick had the fastest cars. But, when Jim Hoar entered the competition he let them know he wasn't letting this one get away. Matt Patrick had handling troubles and again fell victim to offs as he tracked out. Rick Hubbert posted approx. 105 laps but was also sporting 4 offs. Jim Hoar posted 103 laps but kept his car to one lone off taking home the victory, Rick Hubbert settled for a strong 2nd place while Rudy Urban came home a distant 3rd. And while Dad was busy doing his thing son Tony was driving his orange Fray to the limit and keeping it in with a hard earned 4th place finish. Nice job Tony!! Pay attention Dad.
NOTE: Usual strong top finisher TJ Motola found he wasn't meant to race this day as he encountered motor and car troubles in the Sportsman race and didn't fare much better in the other 2 divisions. TJ says he is going to have a wake up call meeting with his pit crew and engine builder. The competition knows this day was a rarity and TJ will come back his usual strong self.
But there were no losers as Jim made sure all had hotdogs, burgers, drinks and assorted foods to appease appeitites.
I'll post photos when I can.RU

Opening their season
The East Coast Outlaws will be opening their season of racing with a 3 event card on the 2 track facility of Sebago Raceway in Windham Maine. Jim Hoar is the promoter and the card will see the Outlaw NSC Sportsman & Modifieds on the oval and to really test the drivers the Fray class on the massive road course. The competition should be good as there are some strong entries in the ECO Club. As results come in I'll be posting to this site. RU
Posted 09/18/2009 – Joey Logano
From the desk of Rudy Urban
This doesn't happen often and thought I would share it with you folks; Joey Logano made an appearance at Whelen Engineering here in Chester, Ct. where I work. He signed autographs and brought his trailer of merchandise. There was a private photo session in the Whelen Photo room and then as he toured the plant he signed autographs and posed for photos. He signed some premade Joey Lagano material and anything else you might bring, within reason. I brought my copy of 'America's Speedways' by Allan Brown for him to sign which he did. He immediately opened the book to Senoia Speedway in Senoia Georgia. He stated he had raced there in a class. I tracked down the Senoia website and made contact. They(Senoia) replied they 1st met Joey and his terrific family when Joey was driving a Bandelero. I didn't doubt Joey but couldn't recall the track and I just wanted to confirm I had the right track. He handles his limelight very well. I congratulated him on his Louden victory and thanked him for taking time to visit. He is on the tallish side, maybe 6-6'1" but very trim and can't weight too much. Not sure exactly what Whelen is thinking but you might see some signs of Whelen support for him somewhere. He is from the home state of Connecticut and a favorite son.
I did ask him if he ever raced the elecric slotcars. He said no but in parting he did say the little slotcars were challenging to drive so maybe he has some experience. Wish he could join us sometime but he is all about promoting himself and the Joe Gibbs Racing Team.
The photo of Joey Logano here is courtesy of the Joey Logano website. Click on the above photo and visit them for much more on this NASCAR Young Gun. RU |
Posted 09/15/2009 – 2009 Ohio Cup Scoring Issue
From the desk of Brad Morgan
It has came to the attention of the Ohio Cup race promoters that there has
been an issue with how scoring was done which changes the outcome of the
race dependant on how it is scored. After some debate by those in charge of
putting on the event we came to the conclusion that all those involved
needed to be made aware of the situation. We based our descision on the fact
that we could not have forseen the situation and therefore had no plan in
place as to how to deal with it if it arose. Please follow along as I explain
what happened.
Travis Joop was declared the 09' victor by running a lap total of 444.29.
He ran a 215.20 on the orange track and a 229.09 on the red track for a
total of 444.29 The orange track has 39 sections and the red track has 34
sections so his section total did not add up to another lap.
This is where it gets tricky.
Paul Kniffen ran a lap total of 443.64. 208.33 on the orange track and
235.31 on the red track for a total of 443.64. Our statistician totaled the
numbers and since the sections did not total more than 73 (total of both
tracks sections) another lap wasnt counted. We should have however added
sections from one track to the others to make a complete lap therefore changing
the outcome DEPENDING on which track the sections are pulled from.
If sections are pulled from the red track to complete a lap on orange the
final lap total would be 444.25.
209 + 235.25 = 444.25 Paul still loses by 4 sections.
If however sections are pulled from orange and added to red his final
total becomes 444.30.
208.30+ 236 = 444.30 thus Paul wins by one section!
You can see our dilemma when this was brought to our attention.
Therefore our final decision on the matter is to declare co-champions for
the 09' Ohio Cup event as this is truly the only fair decision that we could
see. Both of these gentlement drove their butts off and to make any other
decision without having a clue to this being a potential outcome would not
be in the best interest of the hobby and all those involved. This decision
is not up for debate and is final.
We would again like to take the time to thank all those who came to race
with us and we hope to see you all again next year.
I would also like to send a special "Thank You" to our sponsers who
supported us so well again this year. The prize list was outstanding.

Posted 09/15/2009 – 2009 Plainville Stadium Reunion, Oct. 10th
From the desk of Dave Dykes
Plainville Stadium Reunion Scheduled For Saturday, October 10th
(BERLIN, CT.) Silenced at the dawn of the 1980s, Connecticut's 1/4-mile Plainville Stadium was a hotbed of racing in New England for over 3-decades, hosting some of the biggest names in the business. Drivers such as the legendary Steady Eddie Flemke, Denny Zimmerman, Reggie Ruggiero, Don Moon, Ron Wyckoff, Ray Miller, Dick Watson, and many-more all toured the tight, demanding oval during its long-history. In 2008, Plainville's all-time winner Dave Alkas and
2-time champion George Lombardo took their place in the New England Auto Racing Hall of Fame along with previously inducted members Flemke, Zimmerman, Watson, and Miller.
Saturday, October 10th, the Nutmeg Kart Club in conjunction with the Berlin Lions Club World of Wheels present the First Annual Plainville Stadium Reunion. The event takes-place from 10am - 4pm at the Berlin Fair Grounds located 430 Beckley Road, East Berlin, Ct.
It's expected that many former Stadium racers will attend. It's the perfect opportunity to mingle, and perhaps get an autograph from the personalities that made the much-missed oval so-special.
Many former Stadium competitors including Dave & Fred Alkas, the colorful Tony 'Jap' Membrino, Richie Galullo, Danny Galullo, Jr. 1963 Champion George Hotchkiss, George Lombardo, Don Spazano, Don Moon, Jo-Jo Farone, Billy Harman and a host of others are expected to attend.
This is shaping-up to be a wonderful event, states Tom Ormsby, himself a former Plainville modified competitor, and now the man behind www.speedwaylinereport.com and several other racing websites. Currently residing in Florida, Ormsby is envious of those that will be able to attend the affair. I know how much work and effort Gary Bienkowski, Dave Tracy, and Nick Kopcik of the Nutmeg Kart Club along with Dave Alkas and the Berlin Lions Club put into this affair, states the transplanted Floridian. Getting everyone together like-this after all these years is bound to be a lot of fun. They've done a great job. I'm unable to attend this year, but it will be an annual event that I will definitely attend next
year, he says.
Also on the agenda is a full schedule of Go Kart competition including an Old-Timers race for former Plainville competitors in addition to events for Officials, Mechanics, and a Powder-Puff Derby for the ladies.
The appearance of several vintage race cars help-add to the days festivities.
Coming-off a successful inaugural season of competition on the Berlin Lions Club 1/12-mile World Karting Association dirt oval, the two organizations have teamed to make the day a family-priced event. Adult admission is only $5.00, with kids under-12 free.
The rain date is Sunday, October 11.

Posted 09/08/2009 – The Southern 500 / Permatex 300 Race Report
From the desk of Ron Fields
Day #1 Saturday... opening day events.... The Trans Am, Southern Sportsman & The Milwaukee 200
First I want to thank everyone who attended this year's race. With the economy the way it is and a few with health issues I came close to cancelling the race but sure glad I did not, as this turned out to be some of the most exciting races ever. I also ask you keep all our friends with health issues in your thoughts and prayers. As for myself I have barely been able to walk for the past few weeks and had to depend on others to help set up and run the race. Jeannie & Chris Walker, Tommy Jakobowski, Homer, Mika & Odie. So a big thanks.
To our sponsors Dennis Sieck, the Parts Pig, Tom Bowman, BRP and the Historic Trans AM Society for the prizes they provided voluntarily.
First race was the Trans Am and Charleston's Kevin Browning set a new qualifying record of 9.29 on the 75 foot road course. Once the green flag fell Louis Wuori set the pace and went on to win, followed by Kevin Browning and Tommy Jakobowski. 14 drivers did 200 laps or better which is in this writers opinion a great accomplishment.
The next race was the Southern Sportsman on the 44 ft. Max Trax tri-oval featuring JL/AW with a modern NASCAR body, brass fronts and up dated tires. Kevin Browning won this race followed by Ron Fields Sr and Tommy Jakobowski. This is a great pocket rocket fun for the buck class. The penalty number is how many times you go off and you are docked a lap from your total every time you do.
Saturday evening again keeping with the retro/vintage theme we introduced the Milwaukee 200 Indy car race on the 32 foot oval and I thought it would be a wreck fest but it proved to be quite competitive and will now be a yearly feature. This is a stock tjet chassis using the INDY wheels with a minimum tire size of .430. 1 Tommy Jakobowski 335, 2 Bill Kurtz 334, 3 Lewis Wuori 332.
Day #2 Sunday... the main events.... The Southern 500 and Permatex 300
The Southern 500.. is stock tjet chassis including wheels with any stock car body between 1947 and 1969 for the 60th anniversary. Ron Fields Jr set a new qualifying record at 4.174 and set sail for his 4th victory in 6 races of this event. Bill Kurtz was 2nd and Louis Wuori was third.... Powder Puff Rachel was 7th and up and coming star Skylar was 4th… it is good to see youth in this hobby.... ; Highlights of stock tjet racing is watching a tire roll the entire 22 foot length of the back straight and then rounding the turn.... That is providing it is not your tire....
The Permatex 300 ..... Since adding the Max Trax 44 foot tri oval with 154 degree radius turn I shortened the regular Max Trax oval down to 32 feet and added about 9 degrees of bank to the Modified track. It is a very nice combo and works great with this rules package and the last two races have had door handle to door handle battles and in my 46 (+ 2 years of vibrators) years of tjet racing this class has been the most exciting I have ever raced. It is sort of a low banked Bristol and things can happen quick and I believe it is the most exciting Race and track I have ever raced on and building the cars is just as much fun.
Virginia Beach's Tom Bowman stole Ron Fields Jr crown right off his head in a blistering pace in the Permatex 300 which was easily the most exciting tjet race I have ever watched and participated in.... North Carolina's Chris Walker put a JLL powered Modified into 3rd place… the first 7 cars were all over 404 laps. The pace was blistering and the wrecks were few when considering these are open wheelers with 1 1/3rd width. Awesome driving job fellows.... Bill Kurtz was eliminated early when his fronnt post broke and Ron Jr picked up a vibration and finished the last few laps with a large chunk missing from his rear tire.
Tommy Jakobowski ( I nicknamed him JakoWOWski) for running the most laps for
the weekend which gave him 'The Golden Finger' cup.
1 Tommy Jakobowski 1661.32, 2 Lewis Wuori 1646.72, 3 Ron Fields Sr. 1609.79
The best appearing Modified went to Dave Parker's Glenn Oswald creation #24 Will Cagle car.
And Chef Jeff received a plaque for Mopar Mountains best cook…. Flying in from NY just to grill for us.

I have been asked what is behind the Southern 500 and Permatex 300
Mopar Mountain Homepage
Well when NASCAR dropped the Southern 500 on Labor Day Weekend back in 2003 many were not happy about it.... Anyway it waas talked about on the east coast by a few of us T-jetters. Roger Corrie was making good looking retro bodies, and I myself preferred retro racing and Greg Carpenter suggested that since I have a large oval that perhaps we do it here in Tennessee at Mopar Mountain... so I put a list of 1964 drivers out on the boards and the response was more then I really expected.... So the Soutthern 500 was born... and has been run now for 6 consecutive years andd even had a 3 minute segment on NBC TV. A different retro year is picked each year and you pick a car and driver to represent, paint to match as close to the original as possible and many are very realistic copies of the original cars. The rules are simple.... stock Tjet Chassis including stockk wheels or any original replacement parts.
Since it was a long weekend I decided to keep tjet racing retro and the Trans AM was added to the list using the VHORS rules. Using 1966 - 1972 Trans AM Bodies. This a 40 (4 10 miniute heats) minute race and is very challenging and demandi...
With all the strict body rules of racing I then decided to come up with a fun/junkyard class based on the 60's NASCAR Modified/Sportsman class which I called the Modifieds with the Saturday night racing theme from all your local tracks. You can take a tjet, tuffones, or now a JL/AW chassis and build your own creation. Rules are simple any ceramic magnets, 5 ohm or higher arm, any gears / ratios, mix parts etc... but it must weigh between 19-21 grams and use any slip on tires up to a max size of .400. Bodies must be any American made sedan/hardtop steel automobile from the 20's, 30's, 40's, 50's, 60's & 70's. I called it the Permatex 300 since the Modified/Sportsman race run at Daytona was called the Permatex 300 and when I contacted Permatex Corp they have become the sponsor of this event since it began. This class has become the crowd favorite and enjoyed by almost all who have raced it and the competition has been unbelievably close and gets closer each year.
Since adding the Max Trax 44 foot tri oval with 154 degree radius turn I shortened the regular Max Trax oval down to 32 feet and added about 9 degrees of bank to the Modified track. It is a very nice combo and works great with this rules package and the last two races have had door handle to door handle battles and in my 46 years of tjet racing this class has been the most exciting I have ever raced. It is sort of a low banked Bristol and things can happen quick and I believe it is the most exciting track I have ever raced on.
Keeping within the retro theme I have now added the Milwaukee 200 for 50's 60's Indy car roadsters again using the stock tjet chassis and rules. The 1st race this weekend proved very interesting and again the competition was very close and surprisingly the cars handle quite well.
The Trans-Am Class VHORS rules Results Run on the 75 foot 4 lane road course 40 minutes race.

Posted 09/08/2009 – U.S. G-Jet Grand Prix Event Postponed
From the desks of Al Perschilli, John Stezlecki & Rob Hayes
|
September 5, 2009
Dear racers,
Rob Hayes and I had to make a very difficult decision today regarding the first U.S G-Jet Grand Prix. There has been truly gratifying support for the race, and we have been conservatively expecting upwards of 75 drivers. However, we have decided to reschedule to fall 2010.
There were several reasons. Staff burnout is one. As you all know quite well, employees at many companies are being forced to wear multiple hats and work extra-long hours. Some of our staff members, who we are relying on to assist us with the Grand Prix, are maxed out at their workplaces. They are not able to put in the time that will be needed to present this race at the level we intend.
Parts: The new open-wheel parts that are needed for the front end of the G-Jet will be available by the race date, but at this writing are still a few weeks away. We decided, in consultation with BSRT, that the delivery date would be too close to raceday for an event of this caliber.
Location: The race facility is slightly behind schedule. We expect it will be completed very close to the race date, but again, by rescheduling to fall 2010, it will be up to the standards that Rob, Dan DeCosmo and myself are shooting for. In Dan's words, "It'll be like a palace." Words you can count on, coming from the creator of the superb Taj MaHO race facilty.
We hope to announce the new, 2010 U.S. G-Jet Grand Prix race date no later than this April.
We apologize for the inconvenience we've caused some of you, and hope that you understand the reasons for our decision. It's very important to all of us to present a high-caliber event, one you'll be excited about. We hope to see you all, next fall, for the first U.S. G-Jet Grand Prix, when we expect to do just that.
Sincerely,
John Stezelecki

I was treated to meeting Bill Kurtz, Gary Butner, Ron Fields, Lewis Wuori and maybe some other 'hot shoes' from the family of Southern racing. You won't find any better anywhere. At this moment they are in the window of running the 60th Anniversay of the Southern 500 and support events. It is a week long festivity held at the Mopar Mountain Motorplex with the beautiful backdrop of Limestone Tennessee. It has been and is the crown jewel of the Southern racing circuit. As I understand it's beginnings were triggered by the cancelling of the Southern 500 from the Nascar tour, a famous and beloved race on the Nascar circuit. From that was born the race that is now held annually in response to it's removal at the 'Mountain' as it is referred to. Click here on the link to visit the Southern 500 page on the Mopar Mountain website;
Southern 500 Info & Rules
These racers are there to race. And they do that better than anyone. But, please take a moment to read Their September newsletter. It well defines their intentions. And from this they are able to maintain that kindred-like group feeling that makes staying together for racing sake more important than anything else.
As I receive updates and results I will post them asap. Any results posted will be unofficial. For many moons now the phrase has been, 'The Mountains Calls'. Now the phrase might be, 'The Mountain Has Called', 'It's time To Answer'.
HOCOC wishes the best of luck and a great time for everyone there

Slot Pro Speedway, Jan. 8th & 9th
Here we go again!!!!
Slot Pro Speedway is proud to host the 5th Annual Fling Jan. 8th & 9th 2010.
We decided to make it a 2 day event again as last year's 3 day was too long for some of us. Friday will be a practice & get familiar with the other guests & the environment.
Friday evening will be a race followed by a 1 hour enduro(possibly 2 enduros depending on how many entrants there are). My initial idea is to draw teammates from a hat & each driver will drive 2) 7.5 minute segments. Each team will have 4 drivers. We will run lighted G Jets so there will be a night driving period, dusk, sunrise & daytime simulations. A minimum of 1 teammate will marshal & there will be 1-2 teamates to pit.
Saturday will be an early start with the doors opening at 6:00(for the benefit of late commers Friday) Practice will run until 11:00 so everyone will get ample track time. There will be 1 race before the lunch break followed by 4 other races.
There will be equal T Jet & non-magnet inline racing. We will support all manufacturers that want to support the race. Last year we had great support from all 3!!!!
As with each year, there will be snacks & beverages available all weekend & we will have the big buffet on Saturday. The racing, prizes & awards will run all day Sat. into the evening.
Soon we will post hotel info & will offer shuttle service to & from the airports & hotels if necessary. We are located in Naperville, IL just west of Chicago & equally located between O'Hare & Midway airports. We are setting up a page on the Slot Pro Speedway site with all the details. We will announce when that page is up & running.
We will have the Brad's Track & Maxx Track available for racing & practicing. There will be a couple of test & tune dates in Dec. for warm ups.
Last year we had a great time with racers from coast to coast. Hoping to make this a better event this year!
Cheers!

Location & Date
This years running of "HO MADNESS" will be held on January 23, 2010 at
the newly built CRB Raceway located in Willington, CT.
CRB Raceway owner and builder is none other than Russ Upton who

Welcome Back!
After a few years absence from the HOCOC schedule, HOCOC
will return to the famous high speed Big Bend Speedway
located in Windsor, CT. with the running of the "Turkey Derby"
on November 21st.
On tap for that day's events will be a ASRL event along with the growing
popular Jalopy class and a VHORS Classic event.Something
special is going to be done for this event. There will be no
entry fee. Instead competitors are asked if possible (we all know
a lot of people are hurting due to the economy) to make a small
donation towards the Ethan Duda Scholarship Fund.
This
should be a good time and for a good cause.
Details will be released in the near future. So mark your
calenders and get them cars ready!
My comments; I have been and am racing at Big Bend regularly. Of course speed is governed by whatever the classes permit. But make no mistake, if you have the 'Need for Speed', Big Bend has the track for you. Though not a road course you will still have those corners at the ends of the long straightaways. That speed won't be much threat if you don't master those corners from the tight inside lane corners to the faster more gradual outside ones. John and Mary have been pillars for the cause of T-Jet racing and offer a great establishment. The charity aspect for this race is typical of John & Mary. Drawing on the HOCOC Mission & Values Statements this event promotes the positive elements of the HOCOC image of caring for the racing community. I would say HOCOC is proud to have Big Bend back and to contribute to this very worthy cause.RU
Posted 08/29/2009 – Lots Of Racing!
No Shortage!
There is going to be a lot of great racing coming up
this season. The way things are shaping up it looks like
this will be the best year ever for HO racers on the East
Coast especially the Northeast. We as HO racers have the
Southern 500 hosted by the Fields family in Tennessee,
The ASRL for G-Jets makes it's debute here in New England,
The G-Jet US Grand Prix along with the Mini Indy Classic for
vintage T-Jet Indy cars which is set to go in November, The Challenge
is one big event which takes place in Jersey in October, The Northeast
Championships for magnet cars in February, the NSCS with the National
Sportsman Championship which will take place in April and the ever
popular G-Jet Enduro which will take place in Hull, Mass.
also most likely in April. On top of those events each of the
groupes here in the Northeast will offer plenty of racing with
something for everyone. Those groupes include HOCOC,
MARC and the Outlaws. Big Bend Speedway will once
again offer their monthly racing program as well.
So if you want to race there is a place !

West Coast Fray Racers
Not too long back Rick Phyllis and a group of West Coast Fray racers made the trek out here to the East Coast and linked up to an invitational event at Tom Gumina's Berlin HO Raceway. They had other business to attend to here but made time to join other local racers for a Fray format race. For many of uas it was our trial by fire and 1st time for this. It was a learning experience and well recieved. Since then Fray style class racing has been included in just about all track schedules. And teams have been assembled and entered for the major East Coast HO Fray Challenge. Big thanks and appreciation for introducing the Fray class of racing to us on the other side of the country. Many already knewe of it but htere were those of us who needed that little extra nudge. Thanks again and it looks like we'll be running into Rick and his team at this year's ECHORR Challenge.

The dust has settled and the "CUP" has been claimed for another year. Travis Joop drove to victory and will have his name etched in "OHIO CUP" history and on the "CUP" itself. He will be forever in the crosshairs of future drivers trying to claim the cup for themselves.
Racing throughout the field was very competitive with most walking away from the mains having to take a deep breath when they were done. Even with 32 minutes of driving in the mains, every group had 2 or 3 drivers separated by one lap and quite a few by sections.....after 32 minutes!!! THAT is racing.
This was our first attempt at an off site race as the '08 Ohio Cup race was held in club member Ryan Peoples' residence. There were a few gliches here and there as to be expected in undertaking such an endeavor for the first time, but overall it went off without a hitch. There was plenty of space and plenty of track time prior to the race.
A huge THANK YOU to Ron & Beth Lewis and The Hilliard Presbyterian Church for providing us with an excellent facility. Even more thanks to Ron for putting up with Bill's and my messing with his busy schedule.
Another huge THANK YOU to Venus, Jamie, Jan and Rayna for keeping track of scoring, food on the tables, and handing out race prizes.
Another person who really helped out was Danny Rinehart. Danny was going to be Prize Coordinator for the day but when some logistical errors reared their ugly head Danny jumped into the position of race director when needed. Thanks Danny!
Also, the sponsors really treated us well this year. The ladies were kept busy pulling numbers all day long and I think noone left without getting something really cool.

Posted 07/26/2009 – One of those early mean machine Coupes
From the archives of area racing
The history of stock car racing in this country is rich with lore. It's documentation is maintained by those whose love of it has transcended all those years since. Here in New England and our neighbor states we have what many believe to be the best of that history. I wasn't a burn the midnight oil mechanic but one of many who became a stock car racing junkie/groupie who followed it at a favorite track or tracks. And from time to time made the trek to a distant track for a major race. Take your pick, dirt or asphalt and New England and nearby states gave us the full package!! Here is one of those machines that showcased itself back in the days of the coupe, was part of that package and became a legend among those who saw it run. One of Rhode Island's proud contributions. Thanks,RU
This was one of the most potent coupes during
the mid 70's around New England. Billy Harmon
and Bobby Potter both drove the car. Harmon
had decent finishes but Potter kicked butt with
it. The car had a Creb 350 under the hood that
produced unreal horsepower. Potter could run
up front against the "big blocks" at the very fast
Thompson Ct. Speedway.

The following is courtesy of Dave Dykes. Thanks Dave:
ADDENDUM: Actually, Billy recorded multiple Waterford wins in this car,
including the "Memorial Day 100" of 1975. He also notched an
early-season victory at Claremont, N.H. The car was later painted silver
and numbered 06 and used as a back-up to the teams Vega. The owner was a
gentleman by the name of Joe Zenga. Billy was subsequently injured in the
Vega when the cage came-down on him after a violent wreck at Waterford, ending
his career. Potter took-over from Harman after vacating "Smittys" # 11 Pinto.
In any-case, Billy only drove it once at Thompson, and this is the shot.
-Dave.

From Matt Patrick
Hey All, The annual biggest race in Maine for H.O. Racers held at the
Sebago H.O. Racing Complex, The GRILLIN & CHILLIN 500 is in the books.
Again history was made with the largest field of H.O. Racers in
attendance ever, traveling in from a host of locations throughout the
East Coast with names like Hiram Durant, Henry Harnish, Anthony
Zampelli, Johnny "Lightning" Grace, Steve Nilson and a list of top names
from all over New England... it was a struggle just to finish in the top
ten!
A full race report will be out in a few days as soon as it is possible
for me to get it written up with my busy schedule of school and cardiac
rehab, but it was a great time with plenty of door-to-door racing,
banging, fun, laughter, "sportsmanship"(Tony, Hey DH, is that an Indy
Car Sticking out of your eye? lol), plenty of racing camraderie and a
little ball busting thrown in for a great time held by all in
attendance!
For those that could not make or be able to make the date, clear your
schedule for next year at about this time and come and learn what its
like to have a good time and still have plenty of competitive racing and
plenty of good home spun Maine food and drink!
Thanks to all the sponsors... PARTSPIG, ZOOMIN MOTORSPORTS, ACME
SLOTCARZ, HAMMERHEAD RACING, HIRAM DURANT AND ALL WHO DONATED PARTS AND
MORE!
Lets not forget to THANK the man and woman, whom together get this race
accomplished with great effort every year... Jimmy "Dairy Queen" Hoar
and his wonderful bride Deb "I drive the lawnmower like Matthew races,
through and over everything in my path" Hoar...
THANK YOU JIM & DEB FOR ANOTHER GREAT TIME!

Important Comments
From John 'Stez' Stezelecki
Gentlemen,
Please be patient with our reporting the info that you need for the Grand Prix. Rob Hayes who is Co-Director and Web builder is away till July 12th. I'm sure when he comes back he'll be swamped with work. He is also Vice President Communications of Berklee College which is growing like crazy. So he's pretty tied up. Also Gary has reported that the F1 weights have not been stamped with the G-Jet markings yet. Most of their concentration is on the G3 Championships. Thier focus will shift to us once that one is over.
Once the site is pretty complete we hope to announce the race on the other major H.O.sites.
I'm getting a lot of requests for names of people or companies that are willing to paint F1 hard bodies. Any one or company that is willing to do so should contact me. I'll compile a list and in a few weeks list all those who wish to be listed with phone numbers and e-mail addresses. Many Thanks for your support. Email John Stezelecki

From the website
The 2009 Chillin' 'N Grilln' 500 is coming around turn 4 on July 11th and 12th. Check this website for info on the full program of events, directions and anything else. It's worth mentioning in the past the local SUBWAY sponsored this race a few times by providing their large(6 ft. long I think) party sub. This year there are sponsors from the world of HO slot racing!!! See the list posted on this site.
May I state I have attended this event in prior years and one word tells it all, FUN!!! I raced with fellow racers who are always great to be around and one year Lewis Wuori(one of the better Southern Guns) even made the trip up. I consider myself middle of the road and then there are some who it is a privilege to rub fenders with as they tend to be in that upper group. Make no mistake, anyone can get it together and be very competitive. Not sure this year there may be some names among names in HO racing that will be there. Stay tuned for a list coming...

I will post dates and times as I don't believe I included them here...stay tuned...
I have been to this race several times. It will not disappoint you. The facility is huge and can accomodate. When I was there last it had the oval for just plain speed and a long way around road course with the longest straight away to test a driver's L&R skills. Jim Hoar is the promoter and a great host. When the flag drops it doesn't matter if you're 1st or somewhere between last and 1st the racing for positions is a blast!!! Plenty of room is a big plus. Jim is there to accomodate his fellow racers and provide positive memories. And he does this against the classic Maine/New England downeast flavor treating racers to the taste of Grillin' 'N Chillin'. From time to time I will post updates for the race as the one that follows from another Maine-iac Matt Patrick;

From the Desk of Matt Patrick
Anything worth doing is worth waiting for. Race coverage from Matt "Babby" Patrick has come in and Matt deserves Kudos and Thanks for his race recap. Corresponding with Matt I can tell you he doesn't just throw this together!

Date Line: Memorial Day Weekend
The "Livonianapolis 500" Indy Car Race &
"Permatex 250" Modified Race
Well another great weekend of racing at the Livonianapolis Speedway has come and gone; left behind are the memories of a fantastic weekend of laughter and fun, hotly contested, door-to-door, wheel banging racing, renewed friendships and newfound friendships. First, let me thank Jan & Austin Lesterhuis for their ever-gracious hospitality, putting on one of my favorite races of the year and inviting all of the racers into their home with open arms and hearts. The father and son duo are not only great hosts, but both are expert builders and drivers, who are more than willing to share all of their speed secrets.
When you are finished racing at this venue there leaves no doubts in your mind that you have just raced against the best. Drivers such as Dave Failing, "Big" John Vollinger, Steve Street, Jan & Austin Lesterhuis, Dave & Tony Howarth and Jim Hoar are just a few of the names to beat. If you managed to finish on the podium and passed the strict, by the written word, post race tech, then you got just what you deserved and you know you ran for it, no doubts left over in this authors mind.
The track is an Ed Bianchi 44 foot long, 15 degree banked corner, flat braided lightning fast and glass smooth oval. The venue was open for practice from Friday until one hour before the drivers meeting on Sunday. After a candid drivers meeting hosted by Austin Lesterhuis promptly at 11:00 am on race day time trials kicked off, held in the order of sign-in. No questions here as last years second place finisher Dave Failing was back to better his finish as he time trialed quick fastest, with Maine's own Jim Hoar a close second with the backwoods lad "BABBY" Patrick with what seemed like a distant third, rounded out the top 3 drivers. This led up to the start of the Famed "Livonianapolis 500" race, as the order was set with 12 drivers from as few as four states went right into the battle with the fastest in lastest rotating in on the long way around red lane.
There was door-to-door racing in every heat; along with plenty of rubbing is racing trials and tribulations to be had by almost every racer as they jostled for every inch of track, every lap to be counted and section of track to be had. The close racing was not the only thing to be frightened by, as post tech was every bit as nail biting as the grueling eight minutes per lane on the four lane high banked oval. Jim "Red looks Orange to me in the shadows of the tent" Hoar was vicious as lead tech inspector of the day and quite a few top runners found themselves off the podium after Jim went over their rides with a fine tooth comb.
Dave Failing lived up to his name by coming home with the high lap total of 535 laps for the 32 minutes of track time, only to fail the post tech inspection and be relegated to a eight place finish, moving track owner Jan "The Man" Lesterhuis to first with 527 laps. Dave "I'm Only Here for the Indy Car Race" Howarth ran a strong and hard fought battle to finished third with 519 laps, but was bumped up to second after he passed tech. Next to step up onto the podium, only to be dragged back off was Austin "A.J. Sideways" Lesterhuis, as he ran 518 laps, but a re-worked arm pushed him back to a ninth place, out of the money finish. That moved Mainiac Jim "Color Me Blind" Hoar to third place with 517 laps. After a very quick inspection of his car by the second tech man in charge on this memorable day, Jim was found to be illegal by means of an off colored red Tuff Ones magnet in place of an orange T-Jet magnet.
This strange phenomena did not stop here, as sixth place Steve Street who ran 491 laps and was overseeing the inspection process, claimed his car did not meet the spec sheet, therefore no reason to bother checking his ride on this day. Next up to the tech plate was seventh place runner Matthew "BABBY" Patrick with 479 laps. BABBY, while already having a tough go at keeping (the "fastest thing on wheels" under race conditions) on course for what looked like a sure first or second place finish. Patrick lost 40 laps in the pits changing out a broken body on his newly clad ACME SLOTCARZ Bullet II Indy Racer, after taking a couple of very hard hits to the retaining wall of the Speedway's high banks while trying to negotiate getting around a tad bit slower car. Even after losing almost 40 laps on the entry lane, Patrick made a heck of a run passing almost every thing in sight including the tough eyes of chief inspector ClouseauHoar. Late entrant Joe Saccomanno came in fourth 31 laps behind third with 448 laps and rounding out the top five was East Coast OUTLAWS youngest member, Cameron Hamilton putting up a fine 433 laps showing most of the "Old Timers" that keeping it in the slot has its merits.
After a small break in the action for the drivers to re-fuel themselves, the ground pounding Southern style "Permatex Modified 250" was next on tap. The field lined-up in the finishing order from the Indy race, again the fastest run lastest, but for four minutes a lane in place of the 8 minutes for the Indy Cars, no track cautions or power outages and using corner marshals. The race was fast paced, as the low-ohm, fat tired Mods ripped up the track. Dave Failing took control with 312 laps after his four-lane effort and never looked back and this time passed the tough tech inspectors, as did all the Modifieds in the field. The second place finisher, "BIG" John Vollinger was 14 laps off the pace with 298 laps followed by a stunning drive into third by young Tony Howarth as he managed to turn everyone's head with 296-lap run. Eventual fourth place finisher 'BABBY' Patrick could only muster 287 with his under-power HOCOC Grand National chassis topped with his big red #1pinto Mod body. Bringing home the fifth place bacon was fellow Maine state traveling racer Jimmy "Color Blind" Hoar, thus putting 3 New Englanders in the top 5, but only one in the top 3.
To wrap it all up in less than 5 million words, all this author can say is that it was a blast, rubbing is racing, and I can and did promise to all, I'd be back next year with a vengeance. Some notes to end the story with Jan "The Man" Lesterhuis lost about the same number of laps in the "250" as Matthew "BABBY" Patrick did in the 500 breaking a body post off his Mod and re-gluing it under green.
Thanks to all of the competitors who took the time from their busy lives to show up for this annual Memorial Day race and I hope that more racers will add this special event to their calendar next year. Thank You Jan & Austin for a wonderful time, the great food and the use of their land for some restful, rustic camping fun. Thank's also goes out to sponsors:

Dave Howarth --Donating ACME SLOTCARZ BODIES

Early Post Race Report, More Coming...
Fellow Racers, just back from the 500 late last evening and with a good nights sleep... My first thoughts go out to Jan & Austin Lesterhuis for having us into their house for the Memorial weekend of truly fine racing, laughs and general comraderie of T-Jet racing at its finest. I have already written half the story down and as soon as I can wrap my mind around the rest later today I will post the results and pictures of what I'd call my favorite weekend of racing of the year!!
Thank You Jan & Austin for your Hospitality and the chance to compete in your yearly event, and once again I vow to come back next year with a vengence!
Matthew
p.s. Al... I kinda backed into a third place finish after having a little body damage on my new Indy Car... My Lotus Turbine has been officially retired as a Brand New ACME Bullet is now being run by Hammer Head Racing President Matthew "BABBY" Patrick, but after getting seriously walled repeatedly I broke a front screw post and lost 40 laps on the red lane, which was outside and the first lane you rotate in on... The body has been repaired and is now in the Hammer Head Racing Shop being painted, detailed and decaled!!!!!

The following link will take you to a website that is a 'work in progress'(under continuous construction). The theme is Racing in the state of Maine and a tribute to the early days and evolution of home built and maintained racing. I particularly liked the Early Stocks Bomber link that shows the rebirth of an abandoned chariot of the early years from out in the backwoods to joining back up with the rest of the field. A very long pit stop. The site also offers some video clips. Not sure you can get thaya from heya but you can visit this site and relive racings' past from our good friends up thaya in Maine.

From the desk of Ron Fields
I have read in a few posts about the Southern Sportsman rules at Mopar Mountain.... ... remember that my postings were put out around the first of the year before any rules changes had been announced... they will be updated... but with the ever changing bodies available and any rules updates go to the Southern Sportsman website as that is the correct rules, same with the TRANS AM rules... go to the VHORS for any updates on their rules.
We want to keep all rules as standard as possible with the exception of body rules as we run specific retro races... bodies are not as big an issue as the chassis.... It is so enjoyable to be able to travel from race to race and pull a chassis out of a box and it is ready to run with out making a 25 changes to everything.
The Modified (Permatex 300) and Southern 500 rules are unchanged....Ron Fields

We'll I survived another G-Jet Enduro ! As usual it was another
fantastic event with great competition. The race results and
tidbits will be posted as they are released. At this time I just
want to say thanks to:
Durf for his contribution.
Steve Medanic for his work on the lights for the cars. They worked
great while they lasted. I'm sure you will work out the bugs.
Gary Beedle for sending us great cars. You were missed.
Hopefully we will see you back next year!
Rob Hayes for his excellent race directing.
My teammates Stez, Gerry, Bob, Richie and Jim who did an
excellent job considering our team was put together
literally minutes before the star of the race. Great job guy's !
Stez for hosting the event & promoting the event along with
so much more that it would take me hours to type it ( I'm
one of those two finger typist). Stez, I know I can safely say
from all of us your a class act and we appreciate all you have
done for the hobby/sport.
It was great to see Mike Martyn, Joe Eastlack and Brian Skidmore.
I finally got to meet and chat with Harvey Goodwin.
That wraps it up for me. Can't wait till next year!

From the desk of Rudy Urban
I spent all day yesterday with both East Coast Outlaws(ECO) and HOCOC officials and members as well as others participating in the 4th Annual 'G-Jet Enduro' on the Nuvolari at Nantasket Beach Raceway. This is a terrific event hosted by Promoter John Stezelecki for the 'Ethan Duda' fund. The event is a memorial for Todd Duda(Ethan's Father) who gained great respect and formed friendship bonds with racers wherever he raced. The event is in his honor and helps his son with his future expenses. I and about 35/40 other slotcar racers from Mass. and beyond made up this 6 team event. Each team had about 5 or 6 member drivers. The event began with a fine performance of the 'Star Spangled Banner' on the accordian. Lane choice was done on a fastest to slowest qualifying lap time. This is a professionally done event by like persons and well organized. An effort was made to enhance the night driving scenario by instaling LEDs. Everyone expressed great satisfaction on this, however, for some unknown reason the LEDs failed and a contingency became necessary. After consultation a decision was made to reinstal the former lights and run with a low level of lighting. This worked and the race went on. For those who enjoy this format you can't do much better!!! The Nuvolari is a blast to run on with Gjets. And when the smoke cleared the checkered flag went to a very consistently strong team. But the entire event was considerably close by comparison to former years. It was extended from 6 to 8 hours. Many are catching on to the nuances of the Nuvolari and stepping up their performance levels. And it is showing. Several rookies and at least one racer who came out of retirement so to speak were in the event. I anticipate John Stezelecki will be posting results and a race recap to his website. You should visit it here at, Nantasket Beach Raceway. Make no mistake, these are top notch people and racers who know these cars and know how to drive. The event cause raised a good amount for the 'Ethan Duda' fund. In the end that was what it was all about. From myself to John Stezelecki and all those who took responsibility to run this event I extend a personal thank you and support for any future GJet Enduro events.
A special thank you to my team, Team TJ Motola; TJ Motola, Rick Hubbert, Jim Hoar, Mark Kaminski & Bill Craven for a great time and effort.
Additional local club members who raced were Al Perschilli and Jim Tyma. Al is a seasoned veteran and Jim is a developing rookie who has some real potential.

I am posting the response from Dave Howarth on his state of product development and release. I did this in good faith and remind everyone that Dave reserves the right to change and/or modify anything at anytime. as it should be.
Dave Howarth;
Pics of the Indy's are up in this Yahoo site as well as others carrying the Acme Bodies photo albums. I will be finishing up the production molds for all the bits and pieces of the Indy's when I return from AZ on the 6th.
Next out of skunkworks will be an old favorite of those running modifieds. I will be resurecting the PT Modified as it has had several requests.
Then I will begin concentrating creative efforts on new projects for Mopar Mountain (Labor Day Weekend) and sanctioning 2 new FRAY bodies for the ECHORS Challenge in Oct. In between I hope to also finish up a few of projects that are past due for Cullen Hall, Rick Hubert and Glenn Oswald.
October looks to be the next start of any new projects at this point. It is also when I look to start for races I will be attending. So far it has been a busy season of casting, and looks to be continuing on into next year as well.Acme Dave Howarth

Nuvolari 4- Eight Hours of Endurance Slot Car Racing - May 2, 2009
Nantasket Beach Raceway, Hull, Massachusetts, Planet Earth
Sponsored by Scale Auto Distributing and BSRT
Boston, MA - April 22, 2009 --The fourth Nuvolari G-Jet Slot Car Enduro - Nuvolari 4 -- will pit six teams of seasoned HO-scale slot car racers against each other for eight hours. Strategy-driven driver changes, pit stops under the green, as well as night racing (with headlights), will all be part of the action on Saturday, May 2, just like full-sized endurance racing at Le Mans, Daytona, and Sebring. Spectators are encouraged to attend the event, which will be held at 8 Front Street, in Hull, Massachusetts.
The race will be held, as were the first three Nuvolari Enduros, on John Stezelecki's high-banked, 6-lane Nuvolari course, modeled on the legendary 1/24th slot car course at Elmsford Raceway, in Elmsford, New York. With its banked turn, esses, and bridge, the 75-foot-long Nuvolari offers even the most experienced racers a serious challenge.
To start the event off in the proper spirit, Peter Bufano, accordionist and leader of the acclaimed circus music band Cirkestra, will perform The Star Spangled Banner, at11:00 am, just prior to the drop of the green flag.
Racers from ten states -- Connecticut, Illinois, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, and Washington -- will face off, with several national, East Coast, and Western States HO slot car racing champions among the competitors. All the members of last year's winning outfit, Team Massachusetts, are expected to compete. Organizers have assessed an entry fee of $35 per driver; proceeds go to the Ethan Mark Duda College Scholarship Fund. Ethan Duda is the son of national champion slot car racer Todd Duda, who was taken from us prematurely, in a work-related accident in 2004.
A newly conceived slot car from Nuvolari 4 sponsor Scale Auto/BSRT, the G-Jet was designed by Scale Auto president and multiple national champion Gary Beedle to encourage close racing. G-Jets move slot car racing technology away from magnetic downforce - long the means for keeping these ultraquick racers on the track -- and toward more realistic speeds that both novices and longtime racers can enjoy.
G-Jet manufacturer Beedle, who will be on hand to compete in Nuvolari 4, has prepared six identical Porsche 917 G-Jet racers, all of them equipped with LED lights for night racing, developed by Steve Medanic of Illinois.
Doors open at 8:00 am, when cars will be handed out and entry fees collected. Practice until 10:00. Qualifying at 10:30. The cars line up, and the green flag drops, at 11:00. During the middle two hours of the race, from 2:00 to 4:00, the cars will run in darkness. The final two hours of the race will return to daylight conditions.
An evening practice session, including "night" practice, using the drivers' own cars, will be held on Friday, April 24, from 7 - 10:00 pm.
Spectators are welcome: to learn more about Nuvolari 4, call track owner John Stezelecki at 781-630-3064, email John, or see the track, and video of the inaugural race. At http://infinitevideo.net/nuvolariweb/index.html

From the desk of Dave Simms
Gentlemen,
What an awesome two days of racing. I had a lot of book work to do & had the tapes going all day. Saturday we recorded the Grand Americans race on the Tub. I forgot to start for the T-Jet Class. The racing action was fast. Sunday saw a two camera shoot & they are both amazing. I'll make copies & sent them up to Al for you guys to watch. Thanks to everyone involved this weekend & the tape shows how much fun we had. The HOCOC racing series one of my favorite & the door-bangin' was top-notch. Nothing better than a Super-Stock T-Jet with a Life-Like strapped to it's back & no tires sticking out to ride up over. It was great to see Al, Rick & Matt and racing is always the best with these guys.
I've already had Russ Anderson do my next season's Bud Car, the 2001 Allstar Car. I'll start building the chassis I'll run under it for next season. Another Solid rivet T-Jet with a Red Devil & 14 Tooth Drive Pinion this time, the competition is getting so fast a 12 tooth just doesn't cut it anymore.
We'll be starting up the next season in the fall, but DCM will have four warm-up races over the next couple of months to get into the groove. As alway, everyone and anyone is happy to join us for a great racing series. Call the shop & we'll help you get on top of your game. Thanks again to all involved & can't wait to get it going again. Thanks Al for the best memories & hope to see you guys soon.
